Recognizing The Common Ground

Communicating Across Generations

For the first time in history, five generations of Americans are intermingling in the workplace, each of which has its own perspective, set of values, approach to work, and sense of right and wrong. These differences have led to misunderstandings, conflict, loss of productivity and effectiveness, and just plain unworkability. A great distance can be crossed in learning about how each generation works so that you can “speak their language.” But an even great distance can be covered — more quickly — by pushing aside the differences that set us apart and embracing those too-often-ignored, basic human things bring us together. When all staff learn how to appreciate each other, think about how to serve each other, and speak in terms of what the other person cares about, they can gel as a true team, complementing, supporting and strengthening each other to create a group that is truly better than the sum of its parts.

Takeaways from this presentation include:

  • A simple process that every staff member can use to “bridge the gap” and connect with anyone they work with.
  • A methodology for leading a conversation that fulfills your agenda while respecting and honoring the other person’s perspective.
  • A team-building experience that will leave the entire group feeling stronger and more united.
